This is so true! You gave that person who started this thread some really great advice! My wife and I are moving to Nashville, Tennessee right before Thanksgiving (like a week before Thanksgiving), and we are really happy and excited about it! We both are originally from Hazard, and we both are working tax payers who hold bachelor degrees and are working towards our master's. We really want to start a family asap, but we wouldn't ever consider starting a family here in South Eastern Kentucky. For the record, I wanted to say that if people really want to see any "real positive change" in Perry County, they should start by holding Kentucky politicians accountable by asking them why South Eastern Kentucky isn't getting many of those really big businesses and great-paying jobs that continue to go to Central Kentucky and Northern Kentucky. I'm talking about both the Republicans and the Democrats. None of them on either side of the isle seem to remember that South Eastern Kentucky exists until election time is coming around again and they need our votes. People in South Eastern Kentucky know this all too well already, but most of them are either too depressed, too doped up, or both to care enough to speak up about it, other than whining on Facebook from time to time. They won't even roll off their dirty, cigarette-burned couches long enough to take the time to sign a petition or to show up to a public meeting to ask a question or to give some in-person, one to two minute suggestions and/or commentary. Many of the millennials of my generation and the gen z residents in South Eastern Kentucky who can leave from here but choose to stay are perfectly content with barely scraping by and barely making ends meet from month to month as long as their government assistance and program freebies keeps rolling in on time, their families continue paying their bills, they can afford their drugs and greasy fast food, and their wifi and video game consoles are still working. Communities that mostly consists of residents of this ilk can't seriously expect any great positive changes concerning businesses, jobs, pay, healthcare, education, transportation, recreational options, local events, etc. Face it, folks! Drug-addicted, system-leeching, pampered bottom feeders and sorry, lazy, basic milquetoasts are why we can't have nicer things in South Eastern Kentucky!

I have lost 4 relatives to accidental fentanyl overdoses since 2018! They didn't even know that the drugs that they were taking contained fentanyl! I hate that every single week, I keep hearing of more fentanyl overdose deaths! I am so sick and so tired of it! Drugs are destroying this region and it feels like nobody really cares!

There is no hate here, but I wonder if there is some type of program that is bringing them in here or if they are coming on their own freewill and desire. I highly doubt that they just woke up one day in Mexico, Guatemala, or Honduras and said, "Hey, I want to go live in Hazard, Kentucky or Vicco, Kentucky". I'm just guessing that many of them probably applied for asylum in Texas or a state that borders Texas then they got sent here by somebody running some program there who was in touch with somebody in Kentucky who was also running some program here. Immigrants aren't the only people in America who need help though. There are a lot of American citizens who were born and raised right here in Perry County who are trying to work, go to college, and better themselves who need a lot of help too, but many of them seem to get overlooked and left to their own devices, which leads to more population loss for Perry County. Anyway, if the immigrants are trying to get legal citizenship here, obey our laws, and work, then I don't care that they are here. At least Mexicans will work and take care of their families unlike many of the lazy, meth-addicted, thieving, locally born, adult Kentucky residents laying around playing video games, watching videos on their phones and computers, and doing drugs all day long. We don't need any more criminals brought around here though, and that includes American ones who get brought here from other counties and other states then they just blend in with the trash that is already here then a lot of the law-abiding residents here start having problems with those people. My wife and a bunch of my relatives used to work for a certain organization with a certain reputation. I know how certain things work. When people start protesting certain things and posting certain things publicly on Facebook and YouTube for the whole world to see, maybe certain people who pretend to care about "the community" will stop with the shenanigans and the bullsh! t then actually try to help the community instead of the dangerous criminals who don't even want to change for the better.

Back in the 80s and 90s when I lived in Hazard, it had a bunch of nightclubs for adults to hang out at, socialize, and listen to records and bands play live music. I hadn't been to Hazard in 15 years until I visited it again last week, and I was STUNNED to see that it looks like all the nightclubs that used to bring so many people and so much money into the city are gone. I never thought that I would see that. I had been talking a lot lately with my buddies who still visit Hazard at least once a year. They kept telling me for a few years now about all the businesses that had closed in Hazard since I had been there, and although some of them had already shut down when I moved away, I couldn't truly believe all of the ones that were gone until I saw it for myself. Why are people in Hazard even slightly surprised that most of the young adults there are either on drugs or recovering drug addicts? What legal fun is there for them to have anymore, except going to the theater to watch another woke, overrated movie? I truly feel sorry for them.

But actually, I could see why Tennessee politicians may want to merge Tennessee with the Central part of Kentucky because that is where the big companies, best jobs, most resources, and greatest economic growth in Kentucky are. I don't know why any state's politicians would want to merge their state with most of South Eastern Kentucky though, considering the condition that it's in due to the poverty and the lack of jobs and resources there. And there are probably more inbred meth addicts in one county of Tennessee than there are in all of the counties in Kentucky combined, but every region of Tennessee's economy is doing so much better than South Eastern Kentucky's economy because Tennessee has very smart politicians that care about ALL of their state, unlike Kentucky. There are great-paying jobs going to Kentucky every day. How many of them are going to places like Hazard, Hindman, Harlan, Prestonsburg, and Pikeville in a year's time though? Sadly, not a lot, I can tell you that with absolute certainty.

There are a lot of people on Facebook, YouTube, Tiktok, and Twitter discussing their desire for Kentucky and Tennessee to unite as one state, ways that they think that it could help the area that is South Eastern Kentucky right now, and how they think that the merger could be legally possible. I don't see the problem with that if it is legally possible. It's not like Frankfort is doing wonders for South Eastern Kentucky. Maybe Tennessee would help South Eastern Kentucky more than Frankfort ever has. And it seems like herds of people from Kentucky are either moving to Tennessee or getting vacation cabins down there anyway. Most of my family from Perry County, Knott County, Breathitt County, and Letcher County have already moved to Tennessee. My spouse's parents just moved to the Gatlinburg, Tennessee area from Knott County back in April of this year. Some of my neighbors here in Hazard, Kentucky have family who just recently moved to Tennessee from South Eastern Kentucky as well. Tennessee keeps gaining population, industries, and jobs, while South Eastern Kentucky keeps losing population and jobs, and getting passed up when industries are looking for a place to open up or relocate to. You know what they say, "If you can't beat 'em, maybe you should 'em! "

I can see this topic from the views of both comments above this one. You can "not judge" someone while also "not enabling" their bad habits. The sad thing about drug addiction in Eastern Kentucky is that it seems like most drug addicts here are coddled unconditionally, told that nothing is ever their fault, and never told to take responsibility for their own actions that keep them in active addiction or continue to cause them to relapse. This ignorance persists all while the drug addicted adults are circling the drain every day, continuing to lose people, things, opportunities, well-being, shelter, etc., and also ruining their friends and family's lives in the process. It's one thing if you are harming yourself with your drug addiction, but it's a whole other thing if you are losing custody of your kids, leeching off other people because you lost all your income and benefit sources, robbing people, negatively impacting tax payers' whose money goes into funding certain programs, constantly worrying your loved ones who stay sick with fear that you will overdose any minute, etc. So, yeah, you don't have to sit on your high horse, verbally trash someone who is addicted to drugs, and make them feel like scummy sewer matter, but you don't have to make them feel like they are just fine and dandy either. You aren't helping anyone by making them feel like every mistake that they have ever knowingly and willingly made is okay and that they shouldn't try to learn from those mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. But some of us don't actively TRY to stay dependent on drugs and be a burden on society and all our loved ones either. I know so many people within the last ten years who overdosed on drugs and either died or their minds were so messed up ever since that they need guardians to help them handle even the simplest task, which leaves them very vulnerable to being taken advantage of (research Britney Spears' life and times if you ever want to know how the system and someone's own family, friends, and so-called "helpers" can seriously wreck an innocent, vulnerable human being's life). All the head petting, back patting, and enabling encouragement didn't save the deceased ones' lives or make the survivors' lives any better. You can't make a drug addict change. THEY have to decide to change for THEMSELVES and whomever they love and want to stop hurting. I have lost four relatives and more than thirty friends to drugs addiction. And drug addiction certainly doesn't discriminate either. One of my former bosses who had two master's degrees and a loving, caring, supportive family died from drug addiction. He was battling personal demons and life problems that most people didn't know about. Believe me when I say that it NEVER gets any easier with each loved one that I lose to this sickening epidemic of drug addiction!

I know what you mean. I was born and raised in Hazard, Kentucky, but I live in Tennessee, close to Nashville, most of the time now. I believe that I would be prescribed a handful of antidepressants by therapists if I lived in Hazard or any other part of Eastern Kentucky most of the time. I do not take any medication for depression, anxiety, or nervousness, and I do not need to. I used to be very depressed and anxious as a teenager growing up in Hazard in the 2000s, but I am not depressed or anxious anymore, and I am very happy with my life as it is right now. All that I needed to do to get well was to get the hell out of Eastern Kentucky and away from my crazy, nosy, lying, thieving, drug-addicted family most of the year. Maybe that is what most of the depressed people in Eastern Kentucky need to do as well. I just realized that I accidentally posted a typing error in my previous comment on this topic. I meant to say that Nashville, Tennessee is one of the fastest growing cities in the "country", not the county, as I previously stated by accident.

Why does this website seem so hidden from the internet? I think that is so strange! I only read these forums to hear different sides of the real news from places that I visit a lot in real life. I could not care less about that, but I do love to know about the serious stuff going on in the places where I spend my time. Piers Morgan is as irritating as a gnat persistently flying around and bouncing off your face. I tried watching King Charles' coronation yesterday on Fox News Channel simply because that network's camera angles looked better than the other networks that I had seen when I was channel surfing at the time that the television coverage of the ceremony was starting. I'm not a big fan of royals but it's not every day that we get to see a new king get crowned so I decided to wake up early on a Saturday and watch it live with my teenage daughters. I'm not joking when I say that it seemed as if Piers Morgan tried to say something hateful and stupid about Prince Harry like every five minutes for half of the show then he started carrying on about how much that he loved Camilla with such a burning passion. My daughters and I were done with his ignorance at that point. I changed the channel back to CNN. I didn't tune in to the news at 5:15 a.m. to hear obsessive rants about Prince Harry's personal life decisions and immense admiration for a home-wrecking woman by a whiny little man whose biggest claims to fame in multiple countries are for being obsessed with the British royal family who is rumored to not like him and for being annoying and obnoxious whenever he sees a television camera turned on.

My girlfriend and I don't smoke or do drugs and we don't hang out with people who do drugs. We only drink socially. I believe that they all have been to Hazard before. I know for certain that Billy Ray Cyrus and Miley Cyrus have been to Hazard before. They were having some type of an event, but I cannot remember what it was about. I am almost certain that Corey Feldman has also been to Hazard in the past, but I cannot recall why about that either. I am not sure about Kesha, but it seems like somebody told me a long time ago that she had stopped in Hazard on her tour bus back when her music career was just getting started. That would have been over a decade ago though, which was close to the time when people were saying that Beyonce's and Lil Wayne's tour buses had also stopped in Hazard for some reason. Hazard is beautiful! It is neat seeing famous people when I am in Hazard for The Black Gold Festival and The Perry County Fair though. I hope that I can be at The Black Gold Festival 2023! Strangely, as I sit here and think about it, I realize that every woman named "Crystal" that I know personally has been in jail and has had issues with drug addiction. I do not believe in curses, especially involving a name, but those circumstances cause me to wonder about what a weird coincidence that is. I grew up with two women named Crystal whom I used to be really close friends with when we all were tweens and teenagers. They were very nice and moral when we all were kids and in high school. They changed a lot as adults though, and not for the better. Sadly, they both have been in jail for prostitution, drug possession, and theft as adults. I really hated learning that they started abusing substances and got into trouble with the law when they grew up. I hope that they both get back on their right path in life. I don't even know the guy but I'm so mad that the media won't talk more about this case. One of my cousins went missing fifteen years ago in another state and the media barely mentioned him as well. He was found dead a few years later and the case is supposedly still "under investigation" and unsolved after all the time. I have had to accept that it's a "cold case" now. Why isn't the media talking more about this case of the guy in the photographs who is still missing? Especially the local media? I haven't heard any news about this case since a few days after he was reported missing. That's very upsetting to me! And why isn't the media paying more attention to ALL the missing people from Perry County and surrounding counties regardless of "where" they go missing at or "how long" that they have been missing? The fact that so many missing persons cases are getting ignored by the media is very alarming to me!

I have been working here in Hazard, Kentucky since last July (two weeks before the historic Eastern Kentucky flooding happened). I was just going to go back to Ohio (where I'm originally from) in January when my work here was done because I didn't have any special plans after that point. I have decided to stay here and continue helping the community though because I have made so many good friends here, I fell in love with the beautiful region, I have seen so much progress made here already, and I know that there are even greater things to come for Hazard. The best times that Vicco ever saw were when Johnny was its Mayor. He put Vicco on the map. Celebrities and CEOs now know about Vicco and its wonderful glory days, thanks to him. I stopped at that little convenience store to get some gasoline and a soda pop up on that hill when I drove through there on my way to Whitesburg last September, and the things that I witnessed in that area of Vicco that day looked like something out of the movie Deliverance. The people working there were friendly, helpful, and clean-looking people, but everyone else that I saw in that town that day looked like sad meth addicts who had never seen a bathtub or a hairbrush before in their lives. That was an enormous contrast in my memory to how happy, hopeful, and decent that the people whom I saw in Vicco were when I would attend The Vicco Bash, Vicco's 4th of July fireworks show, and Vicco's Chili Day back when Johnny was the Mayor. He did great things for Vicco. The streets and sidewalks were always clean and well-maintained when I was there while he was in office. He had a police presence in Vicco, which was so desperately needed there. You weren't hearing about home invasions, arsons, and drug deals in the middle of roads seemingly every week. Look at that beautiful little park that Vicco got. I have heard that Johnny had so many amazing plans to help Vicco if he had gotten re-elected. I hope and pray to God that someday he runs for Mayor of Vicco again and that he does get re-elected so that he can finish what he started and "Make Vicco Great Again"!

Well, that definitely seems very true about most of the adults in their 20s who are originally from Perry County, Kentucky, but I have met many young adults from other states who are currently staying in Perry County, Kentucky, and none of them are on drugs. Most of them are here in Hazard, Kentucky because of their jobs, like myself, and / or to help people in the region after last summer's devastating flooding in South East Kentucky. Many of them want to stay here in Hazard, Kentucky after seeing the much needed progress being made here within the last eight months. They also want to continue helping the residents of this city. Outsiders and newcomers in Hazard, Kentucky are helping significantly to bring about that great progress within the city and to improve South East Kentucky in general. They are inspiring so much hope and positive change in this region through their love of helping other people, their compassion, and their hard work. It is a very incredible thing to witness!

One of my former coworkers went on vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina last May. It was her, her husband, and their three kids. They were staying in a so-called "fancy hotel" while they were there. Well, in the middle of their first night there, they all woke up itching and stinging. They all got up out of their beds, turned on their lights, and started looking around to see what was biting them, then they noticed that the beds underneath the sheets were COVERED in bed bugs. They got out of there asap. They tried to check their clothes and their luggage before they checked into another hotel to prevent carrying any bed bugs along with them, but they still ended up bringing bed bugs home with them. They spent over two thousand dollars to get rid of them. Sadly, they now realize that they also probably transported bed bugs from the first hotel that they were staying at to the second hotel that they fled to that night. After that experience, they started telling people about what happened to them and warning them about bed bugs. In the process, they found out that MANY PEOPLE have got bed bugs in Myrtle Beach and accidentally brought them home with them within the last two to three years. I haven't been there in five years, and I'm very glad about that now. I also know of a couple who got bed bugs from a fancy Las Vegas hotel while they were on their honeymoon in 2018. They didn't see a bed bug until they were getting ready to leave after staying there for four days. The lady saw one crawling up the bed post while they were packing their things to leave, then after looking around the room, the man said that he saw one just chilling out on the wall close to the enter/exit door of the room. They took precautions to try to prevent taking bed bugs home with them as well, but they still ended up taking bed bugs home with them, which lead to an infestation of them in their home and a lot of money being spent to get rid of them. The lady ended up going to the hospital a few times because of allergic reactions to the bed bugs. Those darn irritating and costly pests have been a serious problem in this country for many years, but they are getting so much worse lately. I know so many "clean people" in Southeastern Kentucky who have them and don't even have a clue about how they got them. I have never had them, but because of where I work and how many people from different walks of life go in and out of the building frequently, I worry that my time to battle bed bugs may be coming soon.

It's not bad idea to have furnished apartments if they can get used hotel furniture cheaply I'm pretty sure they can use them shipping containers and throw a bed bug fogger or two foggers in the shipping containers. Disasters happen and people need furniture if drugs don't happen and it's hard to think maintenance crews at apartments don't use or sell or even get said letting some renters sell and hook. That's a helpful idea I'm sure they've done that many of places..only because of drugs charges would some even care or believe they were hooking their tenants. Plus jailers and gaurds need to help with some released inmates havening furniture but it's not Thiers if they leave and that way they keep a watch on them better

I was at a apartment complex (maybe it was Florida- idk if I should say everything) but in 1 night &1day I found and all of the apartments were furnished with help of a Jailer's in-law he bought all of 1hotel's furniture &tvs plus coffee makerd less then $5k it has like 50 -1&2 bedroom small apartments but every apartment unit had bed bugs seriously bad so you'd want to hurry it up..the Jailer's in-law knew some missionary people and they were said helping refugees but later the people that ran the apartment complex were said crack cocaine dealing but the maintenance crew at the apartment complex was like half or more of the Jailers crew he also renovated the hotel and made money putting the new furniture in the hotel. Obviously if the apartment complex was selling drugs they were most likely hooking illegal refugee immigrants and I guess finding them jobs while knowing they were using drugs

Well i just don't know why he left if he really did leave. my boyfriend and i decided to move to florida in february though so we don't have to worry about the health care here in hazard anymore. i am really looking forward to sipping margaritas in the sunshine under the palm trees with my toes in the sand of the beautiful beaches of florida. paradise, here i come!

It's sad that some inmates actually did have illegal things in prison. Usually before prison in jail they went thru all of any money on legal fees and Properties were auctioned off and most prison inmates did serious crimes so they lost everyone that cared about them. Some jail inmates can afford things only while in jail but if they get to prison and can afford to some how get illegal things into a prison. Have you ever thought about just moving away from Perry County and Eastern Kentucky in general like so many other people are doing? I know so many people who have moved to other states because they had so many problems here in Perry County and surrounding counties, like their family members who are on drugs robbing them, they weren't able to find decent-paying work at a job where they were respected and valued as an employee, and poor medical care. They all are very happy now. Have you ever thought about just getting the heck out of this place, making your problems here a distance memory, and starting over somewhere else? Maybe you could convince your mother to do that as well. Some of my friends have moved to Florida within the last few years, and their elderly parents went with them. They all are living the darn dream down there. As soon as my work contract is up in Hazard, I'm headed that way as well. If I were you or your mother, I would think about getting out of here, too. I'm just saying. I'm trying to be helpful. I just hate seeing so many people being miserable and depressed all the time around here. You don't have to stay here just because you may have been raised here and / or you have a lot of family members still living here. You are not stuck or trapped. I just felt like I should put that idea out there. I know that it isn't easy for everyone to just pack up and move, but if you have an idea about where you would like to move to, you could start making plans about how to make it happen in a smart way, especially of you know any good, honest people who already live there who may be able to help you with your move. I was born in Diablock in 1947 at my grandmother's house, Mattie Combs Jones was her name. My father was James(Jim) Jones. Her little house was still there the last time I visited that area. My aunt and uncle lived up the hill from her. Elmer and Sally Johnson, who lived there as far back as I can remember. I plan to visit there again this year if all goes well.
